Abdulrahman bin Faisal Al-Muaammar (1940–2024) was a leading figure in Saudi journalism and cultural life, whose legacy continues to inspire generations. Born in Sudus, Najd, he grew up in an environment that valued knowledge and the written word, treating journalism as a mission and a passion rather than merely a profession.
He completed his education in Ta’if at Dar Al-Tawhid and the Scientific Institute, where he engaged extensively with classical and modern Arabic poetry and became involved in cultural journalism. This foundation shaped his literary and intellectual persona, blending heritage awareness with contemporary sensibility.
Al-Muaammar began his career at the Council of Ministers Secretariat but soon found his calling in journalism. He joined the Saudi Press Agency, rising to senior correspondent, and later served as Editor-in-Chief of Al-Jazirah newspaper, leaving a lasting mark on Saudi media.
His influence extended to the cultural sphere through co-founding Dar Thaqif and launching Ālam al-Kutub magazine in 1980 with Abdulaziz Al-Rifai, creating a pioneering platform for literary reviews, author introductions, translation studies, and contemporary global thought.
Renowned for linguistic precision, editorial rigor, and analytical insight, he authored significant works such as Hostesses and Nurses in Modern Poetry (1977) and Lightning, Mail, and Telephone (1984). He contributed to the development of cultural journalism, literary awareness, and research, leaving an enduring intellectual legacy. Al-Muaammar passed away on 27 April 2024, leaving a luminous imprint on Saudi cultural history.
