Abstract

Since the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in November 2022, Arab research on AI applications in scientific research has accelerated significantly. This necessitates highlighting this research to understand the impact of this new field on Arab scientific research. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess the current state of Arab research on AI applications in scientific research, its key findings, and recommendations through a systematic review. Studies were compiled from the Dar Al Mandumah and Google Scholar databases, and using the PRISMA framework, 38 studies were identified.

The study's findings indicate that while AI tools are beneficial for accelerating work, they can be dangerous if relied upon unconsciously. A clear gap exists between the significant potential offered by these tools and the actual reality of their use, which still suffers from weak skills, insufficient training, limited access, and a lack of trust. Furthermore, the benefits of using AI depend less on the tool itself and more on the researcher's awareness and ability to distinguish between routine procedural assistance and critical analysis. The study also concluded that Arab researchers have moved beyond the initial shock of the emergence of generative artificial intelligence tools and have reached a more mature stage in scientific research, evaluating these tools and comparing their outputs. They have finally begun to assess the impact of these tools on Arab research identity.
